PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Students at a Rhode Island middle school are taking up hammers and paint brushes to complete a renovation of their school in time for the start of classes later this month.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras plans to join the students at Roger Williams Middle School on Friday. With the help of adult volunteers, students are repairing science lab tables, painting and working on landscape and carpentry projects. Roger Williams is Taveras’ alma mater.

The middle school is also about to announce a new mascot, which was chosen following a contest held by Fidelity Investments. Once the mascot is announced students and volunteers will paint its image on the gym floor.end of story marker
