PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence is one of the winners of a national challenge to improve struggling schools.
Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR'-us) announced that the Children and Youth Cabinet was among 31 organizations recognized Monday as winners of the Together for Tomorrow Challenge for the current school year.
Together for Tomorrow is a joint initiative of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, U.S. Education Department and Corporation for National and Community Service.
The mayor’s Children and Youth Cabinet brings together education leaders from the public and private sectors. It was recognized for its ‘‘Innovation Zone Initiative’’ to improve attendance, behavior, academic achievement and access to college at three struggling schools.
Taveras says the city is on the right path in its school reform efforts.
