HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The victims of the Newtown school shooting are being remembered at the state Capitol as electors officially cast their ballots for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
Secretary of the State Denise Merrill asked for a moment of silence before the seven electors carried out their task. She said it was ‘‘in honor and respect for every victim and to recognize that the holes left in the lives of their loved ones may never be filled.’’
Merrill said she was ‘‘deeply grateful’’ that the whole world has responded to Connecticut’s tragedy with sympathy and support. She said wanted to ‘‘honor the beautiful lives’’ at the historic event.
The electors cast their ballots during a ceremony held inside the state Senate chambers.
