PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island’s governor is calling for a statewide ‘‘Day of Mourning’’ one week after the mass school shooting in Connecticut.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) has called for a moment of silence at 9:30 Friday morning in memory of the 20 children and six adults who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. He asks that buildings that have the ability should ring bells 26 times, one for each of the victims.

Chafee says the past week has been one ‘‘of great pain’’ for Newtown, for Connecticut and for the nation. He says he hopes Rhode Island’s moment of reflection will serve as a statewide demonstration of solidarity.

Connecticut is also holding a ‘‘Day of Mourning,’’ and other states are following suit.end of story marker
