ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York is joining a day of remembrance for the Newtown school shooting victims with a moment of silence and tolling of bells.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the quiet moment to mark a week after the killings will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday and he’s asking houses of worship and other places than can to ring their bells 26 times, once each for the 20 children and six women murdered at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.
He says it’s important for New Yorkers stand with the people of Connecticut and ‘‘help bear the pain of their community.’’
The state’s schools have also been asked to observe the moment of silence.
A gunman killed his mother at home and opened fire with a rifle at the school before killing himself.
