NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — A new charitable website is being launched in the wake of the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School to help Newtown teachers fund classroom projects.
Local, state and national education officials announced Wednesday that monetary contributions can be made to www.DonorsChoose.org/Newtown . Money raised by the website will be divided equally among teachers in Newtown to help pay for projects they've designed.
The money could buy books and shelves for a reading nook, art supplies for a mosaic, or seeds and soil for a memorial garden.
The parent organization, DonorsChoose.org, reviews every request from a teacher, purchases the materials and ships them to the classroom. Photos of the project will be provided, as well as details about how the money was spent.
The website will operate for six months.
