BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) — Maine’s College of the Atlantic has received a federal grant to explore ways to turn food waste into fuel.

The Bar Harbor school said a student team has been awarded a $15,000 Environmental Protection Agency grant to develop a system to turn food waste into a resource for liquid fuel or biogas by fermenting the sugars in the waste.

The idea is to figure out a process that is economically viable and environmentally sound.

The college is using the grant money to purchase the equipment necessary for the process.end of story marker
