NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Providence officials have placed a middle school teacher on administrative leave after she was charged with assaulting police officers and disorderly conduct at a North Kingstown restaurant over the weekend.
Police say Gilbert-Stuart Middle School teacher Jane O'Connell went out with friends Saturday night to Seven Moons Restaurant. Police say that when an officer tried to help one of O'Connell’s friends who had fallen off a bar stool, O'Connell confronted the officer and became belligerent.
Police say O'Connell fought with officers as they tried to handcuff her, yelled obscenities at them and continued to struggle with police after being arrested. She is charged with simple assault on the officers, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing an officer.
O'Connell didn’t immediately return a phone message left at her Charlestown home Tuesday.
