PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — U.S. Secretary of Education Arne (AR'-nee) Duncan has canceled two appearances in Providence because of the weather.

The U.S. Department of Education says Monday’s event with Duncan and the National PTA at Classical High School has been canceled.

Duncan was also scheduled to speak Tuesday at a breakfast to launch United Providence, a partnership between Providence Public Schools and the Providence Teachers Union to help turn around the city’s lowest-performing schools. Duncan will not attend, but the group says the event will go on without him.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten are among those who were scheduled to attend the Tuesday event.end of story marker
