PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A retired executive at Verizon Communications has been named chairman of the Providence College Board of Trustees.

John Killian was elected at its winter meeting. He assumes the role immediately, succeeding Michael Ruane.

Killian was a member of PC’s class of 1977 and joined the board in 2004. He had a long career in telecommunications, working in various positions for AT&T, Nynex and Bell Atlantic. He was named executive vice president and chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc. in 2009, where he worked until his retirement in 2010.

Providence College President Rev. Brian Shanley calls Killian a dedicated and committed board member and says he looks forward to working with him closely.end of story marker
