MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—Middlebury College is looking to bridge the gap that can sometimes develop between town and gown, with a gift to its host community so it can build a new $9 million bridge over the Otter Creek.
College and town officials announced Friday the college would make an annual gift to the town of $600,000 for 30 years, so the town can pay back the money it needs to borrow to build the bridge.
The hope is the bridge will ease congestion between the town center and nearby college campus, provide a new route for emergency vehicles and allow for repairs to existing bridges.
