A 23-year-old Boston College student was seriously injured yesterday morning when he plunged 20 feet from a second-floor balcony in Brighton after trying to jump onto a nearby tree, said police spokesman Eddie Chrispin.

The man, whose name was not released, suffered head injuries and was rushed to Beth Israel Hospital at about 1:50 a.m. His condition was not known last night, but police said they do not believe his injuries are life-threatening.

Police said the man took the fall after making the jump about 40 minutes earlier. Witnesses told police that the man originally jumped off the balcony at a Commonwealth Avenue building, onto a branch and swung to the sidewalk.

"He attempted to complete the same act," Chrispin said. "He grabbed onto a branch, failed to keep hold of the branch, and ended up falling to the ground."

Responding crews found the man face down on the sidewalk when they arrived, bleeding from the face.
