BRISTOL, R.I.—Roger Williams University has named an interim president to temporarily replace Roy Nirschel, who resigned suddenly last month.
Richard Bready, chairman of the board of trustees at the Bristol-based university, on Wednesday said Ronald O. Champagne has been appointed to lead the school until a permanent president is named.
Champagne was most recently the interim president at Merrimack College in Massachusetts. That appointment ended in June.
He has also been interim leader at Shimer College in Chicago. He was president of Chicago's Saint Xavier University from 1982 to 1994. He has a doctorate from Fordham University and is a former math professor.
Nirschel did not give an explanation for his departure when he stepped down last month.
Bready says the board expects to name a permanent president in time for the 2011-2012 academic year.![]()
