Lawrence native Yicaury Melo has been named leadership coordinator for the YWCA of Greater Lawrence. She will be responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of all YWCA leadership initiatives, including Girls Lead, a new program for middle-school girls that encourages a focus on higher education, careers, and future economic self-sufficiency. The program begins at South Lawrence East Middle School this fall. Melo is a Lawrence High School graduate who attended Gordon College as an Urban Leadership Scholar; she received her communications degree in 2009. This past summer, she served as Green Team coordinator for Groundwork Lawrence, a program that provides summer volunteer and paid opportunities for city teens with a focus on developing leadership skills.
