The University of Massachusetts announced yesterday that it is channeling $158 million of the university’s state-appropriated funding toward student financial aid this school year, an increase of $25 million over last year. Direct funding for student aid has more than doubled in the past five years, from $78 million in fiscal year 2006, the university said in a statement. University system spokesman Robert Connolly said UMass students receive an average of $7,100 in financial aid each year.
