The salaries and benefits of headmasters of private prep schools have been rising nationally and in the Bay State. The Globe checked federal tax records to see who receives the most. Below are the schools and the 2003-04 figures on headmaster pay and benefits

Source: GuideStar, www.guidestar.org, an online database of financial reports that certain nonprofits must file annually with the Internal Revenue Service. Northfield Mount Hermon School in Western Massachusetts is one of the largest schools but its form was unavailable online, and the school did not respond to requests for the form by deadline.
