Greenfield mayor seeks schools consolidation

GREENFIELD, Mass.—Greenfield is the latest Massachusetts community looking to close or consolidate schools to help bridge a budget deficit.

Mayor Christine Forgey has proposed closing one elementary school and converting Greenfield High School into a combined junior-senior high school.

Forgey -- who also serves on the school committee -- also called for closing three other buildings used by the school department, including one that houses the Academy of Early Learning.

Forgey says she wants to pay for faculty, not buildings. The proposals will be considered at a school board hearing May 8.

Town officials say Greenfield faces a $1.6 million budget gap in the coming fiscal year.
