CENTRAL FALLS, R.I.—Student enrollment is falling in the state's most heavily Hispanic school district.

Student numbers are down by more than 400 in Central Falls, and school officials aren't sure why -- or whether the numbers will change before schools open.

Observers say the state's sagging economy and foreclosure crisis are likely contributing to the drop in numbers.

But immigrant advocates also say the dip could be a factor of Gov. Don Carcieri's crackdown on illegal immigration.

School Superintendent Fran Gallo tells the Providence Journal that Central Falls enrollment stands at 3,050, down from its usual 3,500.

The community has the highest density of Hispanic students in the state -- about 70 percent.
