NEWPORT, N.H.—Officials of the only school ever closed by the New Hampshire Board of Education are asking a judge to order a special town meeting to cope with the staggering costs and consequences.

Unity officials are racing the clock to schedule an emergency town meeting and determine where to send 120 students before the scheduled start of school Aug. 30. A judge's order is required to schedule a special budget meeting, where voters would revisit the issue of whether to renovate Unity Elementary School or build a new school.

The state board cited multiple fire code violations in voting unanimously earlier this month to close the town's only school.
