INDIANAPOLIS—Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has signed a bill restricting teacher collective bargaining agreements. It's the first piece of Daniels' sweeping education agenda to become law.
Daniels signed the bill into law Wednesday after it cleared its final legislative hurdle Tuesday. The bill will prohibit contracts between school districts and teachers unions from including anything other than wages and wage-related benefits starting July 1.
Supporters of the proposal argue that teacher contracts shouldn't include details that do little to improve academics, while opponents say school district leaders should have the power to agree to whatever contract provisions they choose.
State Superintendent Tony Bennett said the new law gives local leaders freedom by removing restrictions, such as contracts that limit the number of meetings principals can have with teachers.
