SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Four employees at a Springfield high school have been fired after an audit uncovered sloppy financial record keeping and rampant skimming of school funds.
Superintendent Alan Ingram said Tuesday that in addition to the four employees of Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical High School fired, one was suspended and demoted and two resigned. No names were released.
Ingram called the case "a disgrace."
The 13-month audit examined school finances from 2002 to 2010 and found that school employees used school funds, students and equipment for personal home makeovers and sideline businesses. The report found problems with the school store, and the automotive, carpentry, and graphic arts departments.
The audit was conducted at the request of new Principal Gilberto Traverso. New financial oversight safeguards and have been put into place.
