FALL RIVER, Mass.—A former Fall River high school teacher accused of assaulting a student has been ordered to refrain from teaching for a year.
Former B.M.C. Durfee High School teacher Jay Chatterton admitted on Thursday to sufficient facts to support charges he assaulted a student last December.
The Herald News (http://bit.ly/vReqR8 ) reports that a judge ordered the case continued without a finding for a year and also ordered the 57-year-old Chatterton to refrain from teaching during that period.
If Chatterton complies and stays out of trouble, the charge will be dismissed and he will have no criminal record.
The episode started when Chatterton asked two students to end their horseplay in a hallway. One student threw an "air punch" at Chatterton, who in turn punched the student in the mouth.
