Illinois gets $42 million in schools grant contest
CHICAGO—Illinois is one of seven states to win a share of $200 million in the federal Race to the Top education program.
The U.S. Department of Education announced the awards Thursday to all seven states that submitted applications in the third round of the program. The seven states were runner-ups in the previous round.
Illinois will get $42 million, the most of the seven states. A spokeswoman for the Illinois State Board of Education says half the money will go to school districts that speed up compliance with new state education standards.
The remaining money will go toward installing new Common Core State Standards adopted by many states across the country. It will also fund improvements for education in science, math, engineering and technology.
