Davis Square T station reopens
By Mac Daniel, Globe staff
After being shut down last night by the Somerville Fire Department and local inspectors over safety concerns, the Davis Square MBTA station reopened around 8:45 a.m. this morning.
The station is expected to remain open for the afternoon commute after T workers spent the night repairing a leak in the station that was corroding the electrical system.
Somerville fire officials also said the leaks had limited emergency radio links to a single channel. During the closure, trains bypassed the station while shuttle buses took passengers from Porter Square to Davis.
"Basically, we've completely lost the police communications lines we'd need for any type of T-related emergency," Somerville Fire Chief Kevin Kelleher said Monday night in a city press release. "We're also down to only one fire department communications channel, and there's clearly water in other electrical conduits and equipment in the area. Given the degree of corrosion and the amount of water seepage in the electrical systems, we don't think it's prudent to allow the public into the station until the situation is corrected."
