MBTA to pay monitoring costs in disabled access suit
By Mac Daniel, Globe Staff
The MBTA will pay $2.5 million in legal fees as part of the settlement in a class-action lawsuit over access for disabled riders.
The transit agency will also pay about $300,000 per month for an independent monitor to track the T's progress in meeting the settlement's goals.
The settlement was announced last month, marking the end of the four-year-old lawsuit that said the T was not complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The payments were announced in a notice announcing the settlement and a June 15 public hearing for plaintiffs to discuss it before a federal judge.
The T has promised to spend more than $310 million over the next five years to make the system one of the most accessible in the country to disabled riders.
