Newborn baby alive after dumped in trash
By Megan Tench, Globe staff
A newborn baby boy remained hospitalized today after being found wrapped in a plastic bag and tossed in a Dumpster in Westfield on Easter Sunday.
The baby is the first to be found abandoned and discarded since the state passed the Baby Safe Haven Law in 2004, said a spokeswoman from the state Department of Social Services.
Westfield police and firefighters found the crying baby at 3:45 p.m. after the baby's mother, whose identity was not released, reported the baby's location to authorities.
The baby was found buried inside one of several Dumpsters in an alley between the All Star Pizza and Kelleher's Tavern on School Street.
The infant is currently in the intensive care unit at Bay State Medical Center, officials said.
DSS will determine the child's custody if it survives, said DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro.
The mother has not yet been charged, police said, and the incident is still under investigation.
