Police shoot driver on busy downtown street
By Maria Cramer, Globe Staff
Officers shot and wounded a suspect driving a SUV the wrong way down a crowded downtown street today, police said.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was in stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital with a stomach wound, police said.
Three Boston Police officers and three MBTA Transit Police officers were involved in the incident, and four were taken to local hospitals for well-being checks.
"They're fine," said Boston Police Superintendent Robert Dunford
The incident unfolded around 11:30 a.m. when officers pulled over a SUV that was reported stolen in Somerville on Saturday, police said. As they approached the vehicle on Boylston Street, the driver sped off, going over the sidewalk and traveling the wrong way on Washington Street near the state Registry of Motor Vehicles office and a T station. The SUV struck three vehicles, including an unmarked State Police car and MBTA Transit Police car that was occupied by three T police officers and a Plymouth officer.
The officers boxed in the vehicle, witnesses said. The Boston Police and Transit Police officers fired at the driver because of the "imminent danger" to pedestrians and motorists, police said.
The incident remains under investigation. The suspect will be charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, operation to endanger, and other motor vehicle violations, police said.
