A Brockton bus driver is being hailed as a hero after rescuing a 10-year-old boy from a vicious attack by two Rottweilers as he walked to school this morning, police said.

The incident happened about 7:50 a.m. as Saiquan Grady was heading to a bus stop with his grandmother and 7-year-old brother. Suddenly, the dogs, weighing 120 and 100 pounds, set upon the boy, biting him on his legs and knocking him to the ground, witnesses said.

Brockton Area Transit bus driver Ronald Poore saw the attack, stopped his bus, and ran to the boy, grabbing hold of one dog and knocking the other one away. At the same time, Thomas DeChellis, a Brockton Police animal control officer, grabbed one of the dogs with a catch pole. DeChellis said he had been in the area looking for the two dogs who had been reported on the loose.

Saiquan was taken to Brockton Hospital where he was treated and released.

The dog's owner, identified by police as Bennie Johnson, was arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants when he showed up at the animal shelter. Police have not yet charged him in connection with the attack. Officials have not decided what to do with the dogs, who are named Hydro and Shep.
