Workers for firm in Big Dig project indicted
By Shelley Murphy and Sean Murphy, Globe staff
Six current and former workers for Aggregate Industries -the largest supplier of concrete on the Big Dig project - have been indicted on federal charges.
Law enforcement officials say the suspects are charged with mail fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. They were arrested last night and early this morning.
The FBI and the U.S attorneys office plan to hold a news conference early this afternoon to detail the charges involving allegations Aggregate Industries provided inferior concrete on the Big Dig project between 1999 and 2000.
The suspects face an initial court appearance this afternoon.
The arrests came as a result of a joint investigation by the state attorney general's office, the FBI and the US attorney's office.
The Boston Globe first reported the investigation into Aggregate last August, quoting Attorney General Thomas Reilly as saying that while the allegations were very serious he did not believe the concrete posed a safety or structural integrity concern.
The case centers on allegations that Aggregate employees re-used concrete left over after pours and falsified records to indicate the reused concrete was freshly mixed.
