OSTERVILLE -- An elderly man died early this morning in a fire that started in his home here.
Barnstable fire officials said they arrived at the home just before 5:30 a.m. The second floor bedroom was engulfed in flames said Capt. Philip H. Field, Jr.
Firefighters rushed into the house with water hoses to look for survivors. Firefighters could not enter the second floor bedroom because of the intensity of the flames, Field said.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within 45 minutes and later found the body of the elderly man in the second floor bedroom.
The man has not been identified by police and fire officials, but neighbors and the man's two daughters said his name was James Donald Alexander Aikman, and that he had been living in Osterville for 25 years.
Field said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but it did not appear to be suspicious.
