Officials change tunnel detour on busy day downtown
By Mac Daniel, Globe Staff
Officials today changed one of the detour routes to the Callahan Tunnel and Logan International Airport with little public notice on a day busy with events downtown, including two concerts and an afternoon Red Sox game at Fenway.
Acting Boston Transportation Commissioner Thomas J. Tinlin today urged people to use public transportation to get to the afternoon Sox game as well as tonight's Village People concert on City Hall Plaza and a classical concert on the Esplanade.
"Although we welcome people coming into the city to attend these activities, I can't stress enough how important it is for them to use public transportation," Tinlin said. "With the tunnel closures and the water main break on Albany Street, there are repair crews and police traffic details at various locations. It is tremendously helpful to these efforts to keep the number of vehicles traveling in the area to a minimum so that access for work crews is adequately maintained."
Drivers are no longer being routed from I-93 north to Exit 26 (Storrow Dr.) to Leverett Circle and back into the I-93 southbound tunnel to the Callahan Tunnel exit.
Instead, motorists are being asked to go on I-93 north over Leonard Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge and take the left-side Exit 27 over the Tobin Bridge. The route then asks drivers to take first exit at Beacon Street and the Chelsea waterfront and follow orange Logan Airport detour message boards.
