3-foot shark caught off Winthrop
By David Abel, Globe Staff
Winthrop Harbor Master Chuck Famolare today helped catch a 3-foot sand shark just off Yirrell Beach, he said. He caught a similar-sized sand shark on Saturday.
“It’s the only two sharks we’ve caught in the 10 years I’ve been on the job,” Famolare said.
It’s possible they were the same shark, he said.
After receiving reports of a shark sighting in the afternoon, Famolare and other harbor officials went out on a small boat and trolled along the coast for a dorsal fin. They found one at about 4 p.m., and the assistant harbor master scooped it up in a net.
Famolare said they took small shark about five miles out to sea and let him loose near Graves Lighthouse, just as they did with the shark on Saturday.
