At least eight flights were cancelled this morning at Logan International Airport and several were delayed as travelers face a second day of slowed security checks amid the new bans on taking any liquids in carry-on luggage.

Massport officials said the cancellations were not related to the new travel restrictions. This afternoon, a single flight to Ireland was cancelled while 31 flights were delayed, mostly by weather, according to the Massport web site.

A roadblock search was also set up in front of Terminal A, with State Police stopping vehicles and examining their trunks.

Lines going through security checkpoints remained long, but were moving faster because officials said passengers were more aware of the restrictions.

The ban came after British authorities said they foiled a plot by terrorists to blow up several commercial jets by mixing common household liquids into makeshift bombs.

Today marks the first full day that Massachusetts National Guard troops will be helping with the enhanced security checks. Governor Mitt Romney activated about 40 troops last night, giving them the power of arrest.

Most were posted behind security checkpoints today.

Officials said their responsibilities include checking carry-on bags at departure gates for any liquids. Romney said troops will stay at Logan for an indefinite period of time until the federal Transportation Security Administration can bolster the number of screeners.
