A live grenade was found on a Roxbury street today, forcing police to close a section of the road and call the bomb squad.

The grenade was described by Boston police in a written statement as a type similar to those used in military training that had been “improvised” and was a “working explosive device.” No one was hurt.

It was found under a garbage can at 71 George Street just after 7 a.m. The bomb squad used explosives to safely detonate the device, police said.

This afternoon, George Street remained closed to traffic between Hampden and Magazine streets. A sweep of the area was conducted by Boston Police and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Police reminded the public to never touch suspicious objects and immediately call 911.
