Man charged with beating infant in Ayer

A man is scheduled to be arraigned in Ayer District Court this morning on charges he beat a 10-month-old girl so badly she was hospitalized in critical condition.

Ayer Police arrested Bertram Lopez, 29, of Ayer, late Monday night. Middlesex County prosecutors allege that he beat his girlfriend’s daughter, Zoe Armstrong, last week. Lopez faces two counts of assault and battery on a child causing substantial injury.

Zoe remains hospitalized in Worcester.
