South Shore bays designated as no-discharge area
By Sarah Kneezle, Globe correspondent
Boats are now banned from discharging sewage across 63 square miles in Plymouth, Duxbury, and Kingston bays and some nearby coastal waters, officials said today.
The no-discharge area off the South Shore is the second largest in the state and is supposed to make it safer to swim in the waters, as well as eat fish and shellfish caught in protected waters. Boat sewage can contain pathogens, nutrients, and chemicals harmful to aquatic life and water quality.
State and federal environmental officials and state and local politicians gathered in Plymouth to celebrate the designation.
