Boston police officer serving in Iraq hurt in combat
By Suzanne Smalley and Christine McConville, Globe staff
A Boston police officer has suffered serious leg injuries while engaged in combat in Iraq.
Officer Terrence Burke, who had been assigned to the police district in South Boston prior to being deployed to Iraq as a Marine, sustained the injuries in a combat situation, two police officials with knowledge of the incident said yesterday.
Department officials emailed the news to all members of the department this afternoon.
Burke, 26, is a 2-year veteran of the department and volunteered to serve in Iraq, the officials said. He is being treated at a hospital in Germany, the sources said.
