North Attleborough police charged a man with first-degree murder and armed assault this afternoon in what court documents described as cocaine-fueled knife attack overnight that left a man dead and a bloody woman screaming for help on a quiet residential street.
Cory J. Hood, 25, pleaded not guilty today in Attleboro District Court to charges that also included kidnapping and motor vehicle theft. His attorney, Robert A. George, said Hood waived a bail hearing because he said he client was incoherent.
Hood is charged with killing Michael J. Liss, 25, in his home at 85 Johnson Street and seriously injuring Terra M. Marvitz, 20, who also lives in North Attleboro.
According to police documents filed in court, Liss and Hood were acquaintances who had a falling out. Regardless, Hood let Liss into his home on Tuesday and they spent the night using cocaine, according to the documents.
Late at night, the two men got into an argument and, according to the documents, Hood stabbed Liss in the back. Marvitz, who was in the home, tried to call 911 and, according to the documents, Hood attacked again and stabbing Liss in the chest.
Hood then kept Marvitz captive for two hours, according to the documents, until she escaped and ran to a neighbor for help.
Police responded to a series of 911 at about at about 2:15 a.m. Listen to a recording of some of the calls by clicking here.
"She is all covered in blood," said a male caller on a tape of a 911 call released by police. "She is in front of my stairs and she is panicking right now."
Marvitz, who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in serious condition, told officers to check 85 Johnson Street, police said. Inside the single-story gray ranch, police said they discovered the body of a Liss on the floor with a knife sticking out of his chest, according to the documents.
After identifying Hood as a suspect, police spotted a gray 2004 Ford pick-up truck that police said he had stolen. It was parked on Dean Street in Norton near the Rehoboth line at 7:15 a.m. Officers found Hood in some nearby woods after a two hour search that included police dogs.
Hood is scheduled to appear again in court on Nov. 21.
