Education Commissioner David P. Driscoll's letter to superintendents
Dear Colleagues:
In light of the devastating attacks that have taken place in several
schools around the nation over the past week, and to promote safety practices that will protect our school communities from any threat of violence, I urge you to review Section 363 of the FY 02 State Budget regarding "Multi-Hazard Evacuation Plans." This can be found on our website.
This calls for each district's school superintendent to meet with their city or town fire and police chiefs to formulate a school specific plan for evacuation in the case of events including fire, hurricane, school shootings or bomb threats.
I encourage you to review this important information and to work with your local authorities to ensure that you have formulated adequate safety plans for your schools.
Additional planning resources and information are located on our Safe and Drug-Free Schools web site. I hope that this information is useful for you, and I appreciate your attention to this crucial issue.
Sincerely,
David P. Driscoll
Commissioner of Education
