A 23-year-old man died today when the car he was driving spun out of control on Route 3 south in Plymouth and was rammed by an oncoming pickup truck, police said. The driver was identified as Felipe Paes of East Boston.

Paes was driving a 1997 Mitsubishi Gallant southbound on Route 3 just before 6 p.m. when he lost control. After bouncing off a guardrail, the Mitsubishi came to rest in the middle of the road and was hit by a 1993 Ford pick-up driven by Allen E. Smith, 60, of Middleboro, according to a police report.

The Ford hit the driver's side of the Mitsubishi. Paes died at the scene, police said.

It was not clear if Paes was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Smith, who was wearing his seatbelt, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Jordan Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The left lane of Route 3 South was closed for three hours after the accident.
