Mayor vetoes sex offender ban in Marlborough
By Meg Woolhouse, Globe Staff
MARLBOROUGH -- Mayor Nancy Stevens this afternoon vetoed an ordinance passed by the City Council that would ban sex offenders from living in most of the city.
At a press conference, she said that she had doubts about the ordinance's legality and enforceability and said that the issue should be addressed statewide.
The legislation passed in an 8-3 vote by the City Council earlier this month and bans convicted Level Two and Three sex offenders -- those deemed more likely to recommit crimes -- from living within 2,500 feet of schools, day care centers or other places where children congregate.
