FBI joins probe into drug warehouse heist
By Mac Daniel, Globe Staff
The sophisticated theft of millions of dollars in prescription drugs from a Mansfield distribution center has turned into a federal investigation, officials said today.
A FBI spokeswoman said the weekend burglary at the AmerisourceBergen warehouse likely involves the interstate transfer of stolen property, triggering the federal probe. The break-in was discovered Sunday morning.
Mansfield Police told the Sun Chronicle in Attleboro that millions of dollars in prescription drugs were stolen by a team of burlgars, who broke in through the roof and deactivated the warehouse's security system. Company officials declined to say today if the facility had a security guard on duty at the time.
Pennsylvania-based AmerisourceBergen is the third largest US drug distributor. The Mansfield facility, which distributes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medication, and health and beauty products, employs between 90 and 100 people, according to a company spokesman.
