The CAI Inc. chemical plant in Danvers is surrounded by a neighborhood of modest single family homes. But town officials say residents have not complained in the past about the plant's operations, and the facility has a strong safety record.

Danvers Town Manager Wayne Marquis said the plant recently underwent a safety upgrade.

The 21-year-old company is based in Georgetown, Massachusetts, and manufactures printing ink, according to public records. During a press conference this morning, authorities did not describe what kind of chemicals are used in the manufacturing process.

A representative of the company was on the scene of the fire today but made no public comment. A man who answered a phone call to the company early this morning said he was waiting for results of the investigation and hung up.

The company appears to be family run. Its president is Vincent Sartorelli of Amesbury; the vice-president is Michael Sartorelli of Hampton New Hampshire; the treasurer is Paul Sartorelli of Haverhill; and the secretary is John Sartorelli of Chelmsford.

CAI produces ink for uses such as for labeling bags, such as grocery bags and coffee pouches.
