One man died and nearly a dozen others were injured today after an industrial accident aboard a fishing boat docked in New Bedford released deadly carbon monoxide fumes, according to New Bedford police.
Authorities were called to the Sandra-Lee at about 12:40 p.m., where they found one man passed out. Soon after, numerous workers displayed signs of sickeness.
The more serious victims were rushed to St. Luke's Hospital, where one dock worker died and another was listed in serious condition. At least six rescue workers and several dock workers were also treated and were in good condition.
A preliminary police investigation detected a dangerously high carbon monoxide concentration in a closed compartment where workers on the Sandra-Lee had been using a gas-powered pressure washer. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
