A mother of 11 out grocery shopping for Thanksgiving dinner was critically injured Wednesday in a hit-and-run accident in Boston’s South End, police said.

Authorities were looking Wednesday night for the driver of the car that hit the 57-year-old woman and left the scene.

The woman, whose identity was withheld pending notification of her family, was walking home about 9:39 a.m. when she was struck at the intersection of Warren Avenue and Dartmouth Street, police said.

Witnesses told police that the victim was hit by a black or dark-blue Volvo sedan, probably a newer model, and that the accident damaged the windshield. Witnesses said the driver got out of his car, checked on the victim, got back into the car, and drove down Warren Avenue toward Columbus Avenue without identifying himself, police said.

The woman was lying in the street when police arrived. Witnesses described the driver as a black male, probably bald, and wearing a long black overcoat. The car may have front-end damage, police said.

"It's a tragic incident," said Boston police spokesman John Boyle. "It would be tragic any time of the year, but it just makes it worse on Thanksgiving."

The woman, whose injuries are considered life-threatening, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. Boyle urged anyone with information to call 617-343-4470.
