Romney joins Healey in final campaign push
By Kay Lazar, Globe Staff
Republican Kerry Healey swept into Gloucester this morning to kick-off a full day of last minute campaigning with Governor Mitt Romney.
Starting at Lobsta Land, a popular local restaurant on Route 128, Healey met about 50 supporters for heaping plates of French toast and pancakes and boasted about the support of Gloucester’s Democratic mayor John Bell.
"One of the biggest surprises in this race is that some cities that have been Democratic strongholds will show strong for Republican tomorrow," said Healey, who is trailing by 20-plus points in most polls.
With panoramic views of marshes and painted murals of the city's historic fishing port on the walls around her, Healey noted that the backing of Gloucester fishing industry has been "fantastic."
Romney, who is eyeing a presidential bid, has crisscrossed the country the last few months stumping for GOP candidates as Chairman of the Republican Governors Association. When asked by reporters about Romney's support of her run, Healey defended him.
"Governor Romney has a lot for responsibilities," Healey said. "He's done everything I've asked of him."
Asked the same question, Romney added: "We're partners. For the past five years of that partnership I was out front ... Now its time for her to be out front."
"She is going to be the governor going forward," Romney said.
