The state Department of Public Health said today it has received most of its flu vaccine supply from the manufacturer.

A total of 639,750 doses of the vaccine, or 94 percent of the state's total order, has been received from the manufacturer and the remainder will be delivered by Nov. 24, the department said. Privately purchased influenza vaccine will continue to be shipped into the state, bringing the total number of doses to more than 1.7 million.

More than 115 million doses will be made available nationwide this flu season, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

State officials say vaccinations are particularly important for infants, pregnant women, elderly people, and patients with chronic medical conditions. "It's important to note that flu season in New England doesn't usually begin until December and doesn't usually peak until February," state Public Health Commissioner Paul J. Cote Jr. said in a statement. "Getting vaccinated in November, December, or even later will provide people with a significant amount of protection."
