A ceremony on Thursday to rename the Broadway Bridge in honor of long-time City Councilor James M. Kelly has been postponed because of his death, Mayor Thomas M. Menino said this morning. A new time and date for the dedication has not been scheduled.

In the last few days before his death, the streets of South Boston were papered with pamphlets about the tribute to the seven-term City Council President.

"Come honor Jim Kelly as we dedicate the Broadway Bridge as the James M. Kelly Bridge," said the note, stuffed in mailboxes from West Broadway to L Street.

The words on the flyer were superimposed on top of a light-green image of a "Re-Elect Jim Kelly" bumper sticker, a ubiquitous political ad in South Boston found on cars and lampposts throughout the neighborhood. Each mention of city councilor’s name is also printed in green. In the upper left corner, is a picture of Kelly.

The Broadway Bridge, which crosses Fort Point Channel, is the main link that between the peninsula known as "Southie" and the rest of the city of Boston.
