Romney, the presidential candidate, hosts fund-raising blitz

By Globe Staff

Former Governor Mitt Romney kicked off a "National Call Day" this morning with volunteers reaching out to donors across the country in hopes of raising $1 million to jump start his presidential campaign.

The day-long event at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center began at 8:45 a.m. with Romney addressing volunteers and then making the first phone call. The fund-raiser is part of effort by the former Republican governor to amass $100 million for a potential run for the White House in 2008.

After leaving the governor’s office last week, Romney filed paperwork in Washington, D.C. to establish an exploratory committee, which allows him to raise and spend money as a potential candidate.

Romney spent the weekend in Sea Island, Ga., where he gave the keynote address at the Awakening conference, an annual conclave of conservative reflection and policy discussion at an island resort south of Savannah.
