Former state official named Cambridge Police Commissioner
Former state Public Safety Secretary Robert C. Haas will become the next Cambridge police commissioner, City Manager Robert W. Healy announced today. After a nationwide search, Haas will take over the job April 9.
Haas, who has 30 years of experience in law enforcement, most recently served as state secretary of public safety, responsible for oversight of the Massachusetts State Police, the Department of Corrections, the National Guard, the Department of Fire Services and other criminal justice and public safety agencies of the Commonwealth.
Haas was named to the state post in 2006 after the resignation of Edward Flynn, who became police chief in Springfield. Prior to that, Haas had served as the undersecretary of law enforcement and homeland security for three years. He also served as chief of police in Westwood for 12 years.
